Fatal Attraction turns into Deception

“Goodness is about character, integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, mural, courage and the like. More than anything else it is about how we treat other people”(BrainyQuote,2013). According to dictionary.com, honesty is the quality or fact of being honest, upright and fair (2013). Integrity is adherence to moral and ethical principles and soundness of moral character. Deception is to mislead by false appearance and to be unfaithful to spouse or lover (Dictionary,com,2013). Honesty, deception and integrity are infused into the souls and character of people. The deception and lies leads to an unfaithful fatal attraction.

“TV One’s new document series, Deceived delivers real life stories about people who have been betrayed by someone they trusted” (TV One, 2012).  The real definition of deceived was showed on one of the episodes “Till death do us part”, it examined the life of Albert Sterling and Roxanne Johnson. Albert Sterling and Roxanne Johnson were known to their families’ and friends’ as a loving couple with very few problems. Within six months of the relationship, the couple got married and months later had their first child. Albert was so excited to have a child and be able to start a family. He worked as and engineer and part time at a gym, while his wife Roxanne worked at a company and took care of their child. The family moved into their new dream home and started what seemed to be a dream life.

Roxanne begins to notice that her husband wasn’t really home anymore. She found herself stressing over taking care of their child and dealing with work. Even though she expressed this to Albert, he told her that he had to continue working so much. The conversation ended rather different than she expected, Albert expressed his feeling and want for another baby. Roxanne told her husband that she didn’t feel it was the right time for them to have another baby; when she found herself taking care of this one all by herself. As time went on, she began to become suspicious of her husband’s actions and places he’d been. Sent in the mail to the family’s house, was a credit card bill that showed a purchase for flowers, which were not received by Roxanne. She asked her husband about it and he told her they were for a colleague in the hospital. Roxanne didn’t think twice about the situation, but then something new came up. Roxanne found a mysterious oil in there bathroom cabinet, that she had never seen before. When asked about it, Albert told her that a colleague had referred him to it, so he wanted to try it out. Once again Roxanne didn’t pay attention to the clues telling her that her husband was having an affair. While looking in his bag one day she found a box of condoms, that her and her husband never used before. Even though after everything she found, she still didn’t address her husband and ask him if he was cheating on her. She knew deep inside that something was going on so she called her husband one day and insisted they go to marriage counseling. (TV One,2012).

Roxanne seemed to be in denial throughout the beginning of her marriage. In my opinion passed by the lies, because she loved him and didn’t want to see him go. This exact thing happens in many couples today, instead of breaking the cycle of lies and deception; they let it continue on because of love. Sometimes it’s hard to notice when someone so close to you is treating you wrong. All people ever want to feel is love, so if the love is given then the rest is forgotten. Roxanne shouldn’t have let her heart think for her, but she did and it seemed to get in her in a heap of trouble.

Months later Roxanne received information that she was pregnant with her second child. To her it was the miracle their family needed to fix things up. She was wrong; when Roxanne told her husband she was pregnant, he had not shown nearly any excitement in this news. What Roxanne didn’t know, was that her husband was furious. Instead of talking to his wife about this, he decided to take care of the situation on his own.

Albert begins his search for a hit man; he wants to murder his wife and their unborn child. Jeffrey Thompson overheard this news and being someone with a long track record, he was the man for the job. Jeffrey and Albert begin to meet frequently making up a secret plot of how Jeffrey would get rid of Albert’s pregnant wife. After months of planning, it was now a made deal and they were ready to take action. The plan was that Albert and his son would travel to New Mexico to see his parents for Thanksgiving. Roxanne would drive the two of them to the airport and while on their way to leave the home, Albert would honk twice to let Jeffrey know to go into the house. Albert had left the back door open and a pair of gloves in the house for Jeffrey to do the job (TV One,2012).

When Albert told his wife about the trip there wasn’t much hesitation, since she had suggested it a while back. She was unable to go due to her pregnancy. The family began the trip to the airport and Jeffrey was now in the house. They ended up having to back track, because Roxanne forgot their plan tickets at the house. While waiting in the house Jeffrey found a picture of Roxanne pregnant and then begin to feel bad, regretting that he had came to commit this crime. After getting to the airport Albert called Jeffrey and left a message talking in code telling him the plan was still on. After dropping her family off at the airport Roxanne went home, checked her mail and proceeded to go into her bedroom. As she was walking in while Jeffrey was walking out with gloves on and a black belt in both hands in the position to strangle her. Roxanne stood their in disbelief and then went to run, but tripped and fell in a sitting position on a bench. Jeffrey began to say that he couldn’t do this, and that her husband sent him there to kill her. Roxanne still frightened ran out the house, across the street to the neighbors and they called the police for her. The police arrived and took everyone down for questioning. Jeffrey told the police the whole story and then showed them the message that Albert left on his cell phone. The police told Jeffrey to call Albert right there and tell him the code they planned when it was done. Albert replied okay with out any confusion. The police were now convinced. Soon Albert had started to call Roxanne’s phone to make sure and the police told her not to answer (TV One,2012).

A few days went by and Albert returned to their home state Texas, while Roxanne had relocated to her parent’s home in Louisiana. Albert was sent to the police station for questioning; he told the police that the plan was just for an insurance scam with the car. The police already knew the real story, which was that Jeffrey would kill Roxanne put her body in the car and take it somewhere to make it look like a car jack. Albert would pay him a total of 10,000 dollars for completing the job. The court had now got a hold of the case, now everything was coming out and the lies were now known. Back before this had all started, Roxanne had become suspicious that her husband was cheating on her, now she had the proof. He had a girlfriend that was a salsa instructor at the gym he worked at. The jury accused Albert Sterling as guilty for all the charges; he was sentenced 30 years in jail. Roxanne had delivered her child while the case was still at trial.  After all that had happened,  Roxanne divorced her husband two years later and decided to move on with her life after being deceived (TV One,2012).

Not only did Albert Sterling lie to his wife, he lied to his peers and so called girlfriend as well. He is what you call a pathological a liar, someone who lies frequently with no rational motive for doing so (Dictionary.com,2013). As I watched this television show, I realized that you never really know when a person is lying to you just to get what they want. I don’t dare put my self in situations with people I know who are liars and can’t be trusted. To know that these people were all lied to for years without a clue, really makes me think about the people in my life. All of Albert’s peers were lied to and were all made to believe that he was some great guy, but long and behold he was “that guy”. The guy you’d never wish upon your worse enemy.

This story is the exact definition of deception and the opposite of integrity and honesty. Albert lied to his wife through out their whole marriage and didn’t have the integrity to be honesty and tell her the truth. He deceived her and tried to get her killed. Being deceived and lied to can really change a person, it can make you hate people or never trust them again. Even though her situation was rare, Roxanne may never be able to trust another man ever again. If I was in the same situation as her I most likely wouldn’t trust anything with anyone. If her own husband that she was living with for years could lie to her, then anyone can. After watching this episode I learned that you can’t just trust everyone that you’re surrounded by. Sometimes the people we trust are the ones we shouldn’t trust at all.
